LE MOULIN DE NAGEN ET SA BRIQUETERIE

Über uns

In 1654, Pierre-Paul Riquet, designer of the Canal du Midi, acquired this 12th century mill located in the hamlet of Nageni. If mill often means flour, this one, benefiting from the hydraulic power of the Girou, was used for many other purposes: for example for the production of bricks from clay extracted nearby, in the hill of Bonrepos-Riquet. In 1884, near the mill, a brickyard was created to produce bricks and tiles by hand, thanks to ancestral techniques (use of wooden moulds and firing in a wood oven). After two years, the business was sold and the activity ceased. In 1918, thanks to Alexandre Grimaud, the activity of the brickworks was restarted. During the next nine years, the brickworks evolved, so the factory recruited new staff and received the name of “Établissement de minoterie et briqueterie de St Marcel-Paulel-Grimaud & Cie” (flour mill and brickworks of St Marcel-Paulel-Grimaud & Cie). All activities ceased following the death of the Grimaud family and the war in 1939. After the Liberation, the plant reopened and modernized, increasing its output. Since then, the Nagen brickworks has acquired a great reputation in France. A must see in the commune of Saint-Marcel-Paulel: the Saint-Pierre Church, the Ficat workshop…
