Château de Villevieille

VILLEVIEILLE , Gard – Kulturelles Erbe

Über uns

With a history spanning nearly 1,000 years, the château has been a family home for five centuries. Let the owner show you around the various rooms, furnished in period style, as well as the large garden and the inner courtyard.

Overlooking the Vidourle valley, Villevieille Castle invites you on a journey back in time, with nearly 1,000 years of history.
Built around the year 1100 by the powerful lords Bermond de Sauve and d’Anduze, the castle and its ramparts were designed to protect a fledgling village. Its strategic position quickly made it a key location in the region.

In the 13th century, following the revolt of Raymond VII, Count of Toulouse, against King Louis IX of France, the castle came under royal control for nearly a century, reflecting the major political upheavals in Languedoc following the crusade against the Cathars.
The Renaissance marked a turning point: in 1529, the castle became the property of Bernard de Pavée. Passed on to his brother François, it has remained in the same family line ever since.

A strategic location during the Wars of Religion, the château played an active role during the sieges of Sommières. In 1575, it was directly affected by the fighting, leaving traces that are still visible today.
Spared during the French Revolution, unlike many neighbouring châteaux that were looted or burned down, the Château de Villevieille retains its full integrity and character.

Today, it offers visitors a unique immersion in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, where architecture, history and an exceptional panorama of the Pays de Sommières combine to create a rich and inspiring experience.
