The small village of L’Isle Arné, in the Gers, near Gimont, is on the right bank of the Arrats.

The village of L’Isle Arné is the result of the merger of two municipalities, L’Islette and Arné. It therefore has two churches: that of the village of L’Isle dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. The church, built in 1826, replaced the one that was in place in the 11th century, and in which a confraternity was erected in honor of Saint Peter, in 1088, one of whose statutes specified that it was necessary to give food to the poor on the day of the feast of Saint Peter the Bond (1 August). Important works have been carried out recently. The second church is that of Arné, built in 1860, it once belonged to the castle.

At the center of the village is a wrought iron cross on which one can observe a large number of elements. At the center of this cross is a crown of thorns placed in derision on the head of Christ as a sign of royalty as well as the radiance of the sun. On the upper branch, one can see the rooster legs in reference to Saint Peter’s denial, the initials INRI as well as an ewer with the lid lifted: ewer that Pilate had taken “I wash my hands with it”. On the left arm we find the Moon, a nail as well as the hammer used for the crucifixion of Christ. On the opposite side on the right arm, we observe a nail and pliers used for the descent of the cross. There is also the representation of the Sun. Finally, on the lower branch, we can see the veil of Veronica, the host but also the chalice which represents the chalice of the Last Supper. We also discover a sponge, a sword, a spear used by one of the soldiers to pierce the heart of Christ and a ladder used for the descent from the cross. The pedestal painted white, used as a War Memorial for the 1914-1918 war.

During the summer of 2003, a new War Memorial was built, facing the cross, and the white marble plaque was transferred to it. During 2004, following the development of the village, the cross is transferred to a red brick base towards the church. In June 2006, the cross is in the right place. The missing rooster was replaced and the cross repainted.

The municipality of L’Isle Arné has a castle as well as a private estate. The castle was the seat of the seigneurial family of Arné, one of whose members was a companion of Blaise de Montluc. The estate belonging to the castle consists of 300 hectares of cultivated land.

A water mill on the banks of the Arrats has been restored. It housed the Auberge du Moulin, now closed.
