Village de Bédéchan
BEDECHAN , Gers – Eredità culturale
Chi siamo
The village of Bédéchan belongs to the district of Auch and the canton of Saramon. The inhabitants of Bédéchan are called the Bédéchanais and the Bédéchanaises.
The village of Bédéchan has two churches: the church Notre Dame de Fanjeaux and the church Saint-Abdon et Saint-Sennen.
The church of Saint-Abdon and Saint-Sennen, built in 1864, is in the neo-Gothic style, built in brick and not oriented. It is certainly located on the site of an older church. The baptismal basin would come from the old church.
A statue of the Virgin, originally in the center of the crossroads, has been moved near the church. In the commune there are 7 or 8 wrought iron crosses.
In the commune of Bédéchan, a column of red granite was discovered at Fanjaux, near the fountain of Saint-Pé, at a place called Le Glézia. This column is used today as a support for stoup. Balls of fired clay, shards of pottery and weights of weavers were also discovered on a Gallo-Roman site in the commune.
The commune owned a castle. It is an old castle that stood, to the north of the church, at a place called ‘Le Château’. In 1889, he appeared on ‘Les visites de l’Abbé Cazauran’. Today, only the private dovecote remains. Bedechan has another pigeon loft, visible from the road to Saramon. It is a dovecote carried by eight semicircular arches, dating from the 17th century. Today in poor condition, it needs to be restored.
Stories tell that there was a source, now dried up, used for baths. It seems that it is located near Fanjaux. We note in the municipality the presence of two fountains. The fountain of Saint-Pé, at a place called Glézia. The second is the fountain of Padouen. In 1899, Father Cazauran described it as very abundant. The very thick walls were laid out in a rectangular pattern and formed by 3 rows of flat bricks.
2 ZNIFF are listed in the municipality. The first, type 1 ‘The wet meadows of Aurimont and Montiron’ covers 5 municipalities. This site consists of a set of natural and semi-natural floodable meadows on the edge of Gimone. These very ancient meadows, regularly flooded, are home to specific biodiversity. The second type 2 “The course of the Gimone and the Marcaoue” covers 60 communes including 37 in the Gers. This zone constitutes a corridor that follows the Gimone and its tributary the Marcaoue consisting of the river, the ripisylve and associated floodplains. Natural floodable grasslands are the flagship habitat of this ZNIEFF.
To know: In all its history, the commune had never possessed a distinctive sign. Until a heraldic enthusiast, living on the side of Aix en Provence, offered his services to create the coat of arms of the town: The lion, the duck (agriculture) and the lightning (reference to Jupiter) in March 2021.
