Statue-menhir du Moulin de Louat (2)
MURAT-SUR-VEBRE , Tarn – Eredità culturale
Chi siamo
In Murat-sur-Vèbre, the Moulin de Louat (2) statue-menhir is intriguing for its fine engravings: baldric, pendant-dagger, belt, and plate-buckle. A precious testament to the Neolithic period.
Discovered in 2003 on the banks of the Cérén stream, the Moulin de Louat II statue-menhir stands as one of the most beautiful testaments to the megalithic statuary of Haut-Languedoc. Carved from a block of dark rhyolite, it measures nearly 2 meters high (1.60 m of which is visible above ground) and is distinguished by its rectilinear profile and its basket-handle top.
Despite the traces left by centuries spent in damp ground, several attributes are still clearly legible: a baldric, a belt with a rectangular plate-buckle, a finely engraved pendant-dagger, as well as elongated legs with detailed feet and toes. A rare feature in the region, the inverted orientation of the pendant-dagger links this work to that of certain Alpine monuments.
Listed as a Historic Monument since 2019, the statue is now erected at the southern entrance to the hamlet of Moulin de Louat, in the very place where it was found. It’s an essential stop to delve into prehistory and imagine the beliefs of the Neolithic builders at the heart of the Haut-Languedoc Regional Natural Park.
