At the entrance to the hamlet of Rieuviel, discover this female statue-menhir, an enigmatic witness to prehistory. Despite its deteriorated state, it offers a valuable testimony to the artistic and symbolic practices of the Neolithic in the Haut-Languedoc.

Discovered in 1987 by Hervé Goult, when it was serving as a simple door post in a hamlet building, the Rieuviel statue-menhir (No. 2) has recovered its full heritage value by being erected at the village entrance, on the roadside.

Belonging to the Rouergat group, typical of the Neolithic, it bears witness to an ancient megalithic culture in the Monts de Lacaune. With a height of 1.38 m, a width of 63 cm, and a thickness of 22 cm, this imposing engraved stone stands out despite the erosion that has erased certain details.

Classified among the female statues, it reveals several still visible attributes: a “”T””-shaped face (nose and eyebrow arches), a five-row necklace, a marked belt, as well as a braid engraved in the hair. On the back, the hooks of the shoulder blades connected to a baldric complete this refined ensemble.

A rare and fascinating vestige, the Rieuviel statue-menhir invites you to imagine the beliefs and symbols that these stones carried several millennia ago.
