Les Meuses
CAZILHAC , Hérault – Eredità culturale
Chi siamo
In Cazilhac, along the “Chemin des Meuses” towards the Domaine du Fesquet, the “meuses”, wooden bucket wheels also known as norias, are driven by the current of the canal and allow water to be drawn for irrigation of the Cazilhac gardens.
A meuse is simply a noria or bucket wheel. Millstones date from the late 18th century and were – and still are – used to lift water from a canal into a reservoir, which distributes it to lands much higher than the canal. When the Marquise de Ganges arrived around 1600, she had a dam built on the Vis to feed the canal we know today. Initially, horse-drawn wheel wells were used to irrigate the upper level. Then, at the end of the 19th century, came the mills. Six of these are still in operation, five recently renovated and one listed as a historic monument. Most of these wheels are located along the “Chemin des Meuses”. These millstones are in perfect harmony with their surroundings, and are a vestige of heritage renovation.
