This majestic tower in the main square of Mur de Barrez is in fact the ancient main gate of the fortified wall that enclosed the old centre.

This black basalt tower is the village’s key monument, it was raised, windows with stone transoms were opened, it has a bell sounding the hours like its religious companion, the church. To access the “Grand rue” you have to pass through it. It gives the heart of the village an undeniable charm.
