Exposition mine de fer du Rancié

VAL-DE-SOS , Ariège – Eredità culturale

Chi siamo

Rancié was a mine.

This exhibition traces the history of the Rancié iron mine, long considered the most important iron mine in the Pyrenees.
Throughout its history, the mine has played a key role in the life of the whole Haute Ariège region. Its operation is mentioned in ancient texts as far back as 1294, and it didn’t officially close until 1931.
Miners’ picks, oil lamps, gorbilho, engravings, old photographs and period documents are on display, and Francis Arthur Fontés’ twenty-minute film lets you relive the living conditions of these mining families.
A visit to this exhibition can be the culmination of a cultural walk entitled “In the footsteps of the Rancié miners”, where you can follow the real stone path used by miners and muleteers to sell their ore.
A small library about the mine (to be consulted on site).
To complete your visit, a mine area has been set up in the Maison des Patrimoines, le Barri in Auzat.
Visits to the exhibition: July and August, 2-4pm, or by appointment all year round. Free admission.
