Chapelle des Penitents Bleus

Chi siamo
Chapel of the Cordeliers, then the Pénitents Bleus (14th – 15th centuries). Its flamboyant Gothic porch is rare in the Languedoc region. The choir and several bays were destroyed in the 19th century, at the same time as the ramparts against which it was built. After serving as a meeting place for representatives of the three Orders (Clergy, Nobility, Third Estate) to draw up the cahier des doléances, the chapel was sold during the Revolution, then bought back and entrusted to the Confrérie des Pénitents bleus.
On the back wall, take a look at the huge scale model built between 1780 and 1810: a millimeter-accurate reproduction of a gunboat commissioned by Louis XVI for the Etats du Languedoc. This warship patrolled the coast of the Biterrois region, to deter “barbarian pirates”…
