Allées Paul Riquet

BEZIERS , Hérault – Eredità culturale

Chi siamo

Created in 1827 on the filled-in ditches, the Allées Paul Riquet are the heart of Béziers: theater to the north, Plateau des Poètes to the south and Riquet statue in the center. A promenade, a market and a link between the old town and the wine boom of the 19th century.

Built in 1827 on the former rampart ditches, the Allées Paul Riquet have always been the lively heart of Béziers. A must-see place for strolling, they come alive every Friday morning with the colors of the flower market.

To the north stands the municipal theater, to the south the Plateau des Poètes, and in the center the statue of Pierre Paul Riquet, sculpted by David d’Angers in 1838, in tribute to the creator of the Canal du Midi. Opposite, the Place Jean Jaurès, formerly known as the Place de la Citadelle, recalls the site of the fortified castle of the Trencavel family, former lords of Béziers.

A true link between the old town and the “new town”, the Allées symbolize the transition to the winegrowing golden age of the XIXᵉ century.
