CASTELNOU

Some twenty kilometres south-west of Perpignan, Castelnou lies at the foot of the Aspres mountains, with the Canigou, the Catalans’ mythical mountain, as a backdrop. The village still retains its medieval appearance, with its ramparts punctuated by 8 towers and 4 gates set at the 4 cardinal points, and its watchtower. Dominating the village, the château Vicomtal has had to adapt its pentagonal shape to the steep, irregular ridges of the rock on which it stands. It was built in 990 by the Viscount of Castelnou as a military base for the Viscounty of Vallespir. The village is organised around two parallel streets, carrer d’Avall and carrer del Migt. Visitors to the village will notice bread ovens and genoises painted on the underside of roof tiles…
