CHÂTEAU DE LAVARDENS

LAVARDENS , Gers – Cultural heritage

About

Fiefdom of the Counts of Armagnac (12th century), the Chateau of Lavardens was rebuilt in the 17th century by Antoine de Roquelaure, companion and friend of Henry 4th, for the love of his life, Suzanne de Bassabat. After the Revolution, it was sold to 12 families, the absence of a co-ownership agreement gradually led the building towards ruin. In 1653 an epidemic of the plague devastated the village; the majestic building of white stone would never be completed. It has since remained intact, but frozen, as a building site. It was saved by a handful of enthusiastic supporters in the 1960s.
Classed as an Historic Monument, the Chateau, 12th to 17th century, shows unique architectural prowess. Its huge and beautiful rooms host exhibitions of great quality throughout the year (Camille Claudel, Dali……).
