Ruins of the Château des Mothes

During the High Middle Ages, likely in the 12th century, a castle was built on a hill overlooking the Tarn plain, providing a vantage point to control this transit area (overlooking the Nauze, formed by an ancient bend in the Tarn) between the Montalbanais, the Albigeois and the Rouergue upstream from the Aveyron, and Gascony.
This was the seigneurial castle of Lafrançaise. Known as the Château des Mothes, it initially belonged to the Saint-Geniès family but passed by marriage to the Parazols at the end of the 14th century. They made it their primary residence until the 17th century.
Ranked among the oldest medieval ruins in the town, it is now largely in ruins, but its tall square brick tower can still be seen rising above the treetops.
The ruins are not accessible and cannot be visited; do not approach them (danger of collapse).
