THE LAKE SALAGOU

CLERMONT-L’HERAULT , Hérault – Natural heritage

About

The many visitor sites and leisure facilities make this a lively centre for tourism. Fishing, water activities, bathing and mountain biking certainly keep nature-lovers busy. A 70km-long artificial lake was built in 1968 to irrigate the surrounding cultivated land and regulate the water levels of the Lergue and Hérault rivers. Today, this striking landscape is characterised by its red-coloured mountains and the red soil and rock of the region, ‘les ruffes’, as well as the blackness of the area’s volcanic rock. At 533 metres, Mont Liausson dominates the region. The territory is also well known for the olives of Lucques, its oil, its honey and its plentiful vineyards.
