RUNES WATERFALL
LE PONT-DE-MONTVERT , Lozère – Natural heritage
About
The Runes Waterfall rises to nearly sixty meters in total height, with two cascades — one plunging 46 meters into a 7-meter-deep pool, and the other descending a further 24 meters. The stream originates in the granite rocks of Mont Lozère before flowing into the Tarn River. This is an exceptional type of landscape for the Cévennes and Lozère regions. Carved into the rock, the waterfall offers a refreshing and shaded spot along your walk. At the top of the falls lies a carved stone depicting a dragon biting its own tail. Inside the circle are inscribed the words: “From the earth to the sky, and from the sky to the earth.” According to local legend, a group of wandering Vikings on Mont Lozère at the end of the first millennium carved this mysterious message.
