VOUTE VAUBAN

LES CAMMAZES , Tarn – Cultural heritage

About

A true architectural feat, Vauban vault plays an essential role in conveying water to Saint-Ferréol lake and the Canal du Midi.

Pierre-Paul Riquet realised that only by harnessing the waters of the Montagne Noire would his future canal be able to cross the highest point of Naurouze watershed at 189m. So he built two supply channels: Rigole de la Montagne and Rigole de la Plaine. Rigole de la Montagne ends at Les Cammazes. Rigole de la Montagne begins at Prise d’Alzeau and, in Riquet’s original design, winds its way through the forest as far as Le Conquet. It was Vauban who, a few years later, had Rigole de la Montagne continued as far as Les Cammazes. He had the 123m-long vault built, enabling Rigole de la Montagne to flow into Laudot stream so towards Saint-Ferréol lake. A must: dare to walk along Rigole de la Montagne, passing through the vault. Torch required and thrills guaranteed!
