Designated as one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France, Villefranche-de-Conflent is also a medieval town fortified by Vauban, with three of its sites listed as UNESCO World Heritage. As such, Villefranche-de-Conflent is a must-visit in the Conflent region for all lovers of Vauban’s work and heritage. At the same time, the town will enchant you with its cobbled streets. You can explore the ramparts and the Viguerie Tower, built by the Count of Cerdagne in the 11th century and later strengthened by Vauban’s fortifications in the 17th century, as well as Fort Libéria, recently listed as UNESCO World Heritage. You can also discover the shops and houses of local notables or wealthy merchants, the Romanesque Saint James Church with its rich furnishings. Nearby, don’t miss the Great Canalettes caves with their stunning formations and the Cova Bastera cave, also classified as UNESCO World Heritage as part of the Vauban network.
