Village of Saramon
SARAMON , Gers – Cultural heritage
About
The town of Saramon developed in the 9th century around a priory belonging to the Sorèze abbey.
The commune has a church, that of Saint Pierre. It was authenticated as a major monument from the second half of the 11th century. The church, originally Romanesque, was remodeled in the 19th century.
Remarkable monuments in Saramon include the Renaissance House, with facades pierced by windows and separated by light columns, topped with small capitals. These windows are located on the first floor, supported by a series of sculpted modillions. Facade listed in the supplementary inventory of historical monuments in 1929.
The vast majority of houses arranged above the arcades have half-timbered facades now masked by a coating. The frame of the house is made of wood, the filling between the rooms is done with brick or wattle. Wood was rarely intended to be seen, on the contrary, efforts were made to give the facades windows and shapes identical to those of stone houses. If the wood is today visible on certain facades, it is partly due to the degradation of the coating that covered them. We still find some of them very colorful testifying to a forgotten tradition that consisted of choosing a coating with very strong colors, ochre, red,… With a white frame.
The town has a castle, the Château du Karabé, built in the 19th century on the site of an old pottery. The date of 1849 inscribed above the main portal testifies to the end of construction.
On the canton of Saramon were 3 abbeys: that of Faget, that of Boulaur and the abbey of Saramon.
The city received a charter of customs in the 14th century. Having become a fortified city, it protects the Count of Astarac who came to take refuge there.
In the 19th century, given their state of obsolescence, several towers and the two gates of the city were razed; there are some vestiges of one of them: the gate of the Breach.
The city of Saramon has 3 ZNEFF. We feel a type 1 ZNIEFF ‘The wet meadows of the Gimone in Saramon’ covering 87 hectares over 5 municipalities. It is a set of natural and semi-natural floodable meadows on the edge of Gimone. They constitute an interesting reservoir of biodiversity. The commune also has 2 ZNIEFF type 2. «Les coteaux de la Lauze et de l’Arrats» covering 5264 hectares in 18 communes. This is an area bounded by the valley floor and the rugged hillsides on the right bank of the Lauze River. The variety of plant formation and land use make it an environment rich in biodiversity. A second type 2 ZNIEFF is listed in the municipality, «Le cours de la Gimone et de la Marcaoue» covering 3085 hectares across 60 municipalities. This zone constitutes a corridor that follows the Gimone and its tributary the Marcaoue consisting of the river, the ripisylve and associated floodplains. Natural floodable grasslands are the flagship habitat of this ZNIEFF.
On site, you can visit the Romanesque church with baroque altarpiece in gilded wood of the eighteenth century and the chapel of the Sacred heart, the houses of the Renaissance, the door of the breach, the central square to covers…
