Saint-Sauvy is a picturesque village in the Gers, offering a peaceful and green rural setting.
Crypt: The cemetery of Saint Sauvy has a peculiarity: a crypt. Dating from the Romanesque period, it contains frescoes from the modern era and the 19th century as well as two Romanesque marble coffins, one of which was once used as an altar. This vaulted crypt, remodeled in the 19th century was transformed into a chapel in 1874. The place is surmounted by the unique fanal or “lantern of the dead” of the department of Gers.
The Touron Cave has become a communal fountain. This healing fountain was once a temple with a sacred source, indeed Touron, from Taraux is indeed a Gallic memory.
Saint Sauvy legend: He tells a legend in the village, the legend of the Martyr of Saint Sauvy: – «It is said that St Sauvy, hence St Sauvy, was martyred in front of a pagan temple. A new convert wanting to remove the body of the saint from popular desecration, wrapped it in a sheet and placing it on his cart, he carried it to the top of the mound, today the cemetery, at the sunset of the fountain. But as the terrain is steep, the oxen could not climb. Impatiently, the cattle dog armed with a needlepiece in a hackberry hit the harness roughly, but to no avail. It is then that out of anger he planted his aiguillade there and clung to the wheel blasphemously. Immediately, the cart climbed the slope. And in place of the needling had grown a gigantic hackberry that has recently disappeared. The surroundings of the fountain are the only place in the department where micocouliers are reported. The martyr was placed in a stone tomb, in a cave, which became the chapel of the cemetery, and by honorable fine, he put a plow and a burrow in the coffin. In the cemetery of St Sauvy there is indeed a crypt with stone sarcophagi.
