Montiron is a picturesque village in the Gers, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.
The church of the commune of Montiron was built between 1870 and 1876. The current church replaced a sanctuary that was located at the foot of the castle, now disappeared. The primitive church was next to it, it was destroyed because it threatened to collapse.
Montiron had a castle. From its layout on the heights, the municipality was a perfect place to accommodate a castle. It was certainly built of wood because in the town, there are no stones. This castle is mentioned in the 12th century. Today there is no trace of it left.
In 1854, information provided to the departmental administration mentioned 2 water mills in the commune.
In the municipality of Montiron, a paleontological site has been identified. M G.Astre studied the territory of the commune and in particular a site that yielded mastodon bones over a dozen million years old. At a place called Lamaguère, some prehistoric objects have been updated. The press of 1894 reports that an earthenware vase containing copper and silver coins was discovered in the commune. It would certainly come from the Gallo-Roman period.
The municipality has two ZNIEFs. A type 1 ZNIEFF ‘The wet meadows of Aurimont and Montiron’ covering 61 hectares in 5 municipalities. This site consists of a set of natural and semi-natural floodable meadows on the edge of Gimone. These very ancient meadows, regularly flooded, are home to specific biodiversity.
The commune also has a type 2 ZNIEFF “Le cours de la Gimone et de la Marcaoue”, covering 3085 hectares in 60 communes. This zone constitutes a corridor that follows the Gimone and its tributary the Marcaoue consisting of the river, the ripisylve and associated floodplains. The floodable natural grasslands constitute the flagship habitat of this ZNIEFF. This ecosystem is characterized by its fauna and flora. Many species live here.
Montiron inspired the poet Loys Masson who received the Arthaud prize in 1966 for the book “La Dame de Pavoux” in which his first poem evokes Montiron. Also, the configuration of this village, high and steep, leaves room for imagination. Thus, the locals told, from generation to generation, “That’s what a shoe by Gargantua left!” or also “It is said that, at the Creation, God after having made the Earth, after having molded so many things, shook his hands and what fell, that’s it, these high hills!”.
