MONGAUSY , Gers – Cultural heritage
About
Mongausy is a small village in the Gers, nestled in a green and quiet landscape, typical of the Gascon countryside. With its traditional architecture and peaceful atmosphere, it offers an authentic and relaxing living environment.
Mongausy will mean Mont-Joie. Mongausy has merged with an old commune: Larroucau
In the village of Mongausy, there is the church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste and the church of Larroucau.
The commune has a feudal castle from the 18th century, the Château de Tancouet. This castle is private, it cannot be visited.
The town, from its dominant aspect, offers a superb view of the Pyrenees, visible on clear days.
The municipality of Mongausy has two ZNIEFs, thus protecting many species.
The first, type 1, entitled “The wet meadows of the Gimone in Saramon” covers 5 municipalities of the department, on 87 hectares. It is a set of floodable natural and semi-natural meadows, on the edge of Gimone, which constitute an interesting biodiversity reservoir.
The ZNIEFF type 2, named ‘Le cours de la Gimone et de la Marcaoue’ covers 60 municipalities including 37 in the Gers, covering 3085 hectares. This area consists of the river, the ripisylve and associated floodplains. Natural floodable grasslands are the flagship habitat of this ZNIEFF.
