Village of Aurimont

On the historical and cultural level, the town of Aurimont is in the country of Astarac, a territory of southern Gers very hilly, with clay soil, which runs along the plateau of Lannemezan.

You can discover in the town of Aurimont, the church of Préchac. Of Romanesque style, it has been restored as well as the yokes of the bells and part of the framework. The stained glass windows were dismantled and replaced by new ones. Little by little and thanks to the enthusiasm of the inhabitants, the building was saved. During its restoration, several statues disappeared, probably stolen. Today, they have all been moved to the church or the town hall pending the complete restoration. The church is not open to the public. There is also a stoup, which is, in reality, an Antique column.

In the village of Aurimont, the church of Saint-Loup was rebuilt in the second half of the 19th century. It is in the Toulouse style with a brick bell tower extended by a masonry spire.

The church of Saint-Blaise was destroyed during the Revolution.

In Aurimont, there are still 3 locks, still functional, of the water mill. It has been bought and renovated by private individuals. A windmill, visible from the path of En Jeannet Carreau, has been converted into a cottage.

The fountain, dedicated to Saint-Loup, visible, is located in a cultivated field. At the time, a procession took place once a year with the arrival of priests.

Aurimont was a city that had many wells. Currently, most of them have been filled. Only 2 wells remain behind the bakery. Grenades, from the war, were discovered at the bottom of these wells.

The first, type 1 “the wet meadows of Aurimont and Montiron” covers 5 communes of the department. This site consists of a set of natural and semi-natural floodable meadows on the edge of Gimone. These very ancient meadows, regularly flooded, are home to specific biodiversity.

The second, type 2, “the course of the Gimone and the Marcaoue” of 3085 ha covers 60 communes including 37 in the Gers. This zone constitutes a corridor that follows the Gimone and its tributary the Marcaoue consisting of the river, the ripisylve and associated floodplains. Natural floodable grasslands are the flagship habitat of this ZNIEFF.
