Village of Aubiet
AUBIET , Gers – Cultural heritage
About
The village takes its name from ‘albinellum’, a place covered with plants with white leaves or flowers.
The parish of Aubiet had 7 churches before the religious wars. Many of them disappeared at that time. The church of Saint Abdon and Sennen (Our Lady of Charity) still survives. The church was built in the 16th century and the bell tower finished in 1587. The baptismal fountain is dated 1685.
The Deaf Bell: Among the remarkable objects of the church, and classified as Historical Monuments, one can note the presence of a bronze bell baptized “The Deaf”. It certainly dates from the 15th-16th century. Its name was certainly given to it following a stroke of lightning that would have altered its sound. The melting of the bell would have been ordered by Charlemagne and would have sounded the crusades. This legend may have allowed the deaf person to escape, during the revolutionary period, a redesign. It has been for a long time an object of veneration of the population. The letters are very beautiful gothic minuscules. The founder of Aubiet had very beautiful dies but he lacked them. He therefore used the letter B to replace the missing V, T, U and H. Like many of his colleagues, he lacked the letters M and N. He formed them with I placed side by side. The bas-relief of the Madonna and child is repeated twice. The bell is neither dated nor signed. Surely dated from the 16th century.
The commune has been the subject of different excavations. Many tile sites have been identified. At a place called «La Toulette», excavations began in 1966 and continued until 1972. Surface surveys reveal many archaeological materials: fragments of blue glasses (cup and vase), window glass, black and white mosaics, fragments of painted wall plasters, bronze chest key, fragments of oil lamp, coins (sesterce, Claude II, Faustine II, Constance II )… This establishment was occupied from the end of the 1st century and continues until the 4th century. At the locality “La Grange Neuve”, remains of coins, marbles and vases testify to the presence of an old Gallo-Roman villa.
Last castle town of Armagnac, it has a communal charter dated 1288. It was occupied from the Gallo-Roman period (1st to 4th centuries). From this period was discovered notably the “togatus” bust without a marble head, located near the cemetery.
The commune of Aubiet has a museum from the 1st and 2nd world war. Among the object collection, we also find military aviation parts. Like many rural communes during the war 14/18, Aubiet suffered hostage taking, looting of the city (houses burned) and 35 resistance fighters were killed.
Today Aubiet is one of the tourist attractions of its territory Coteaux Arrats Gimone thanks to its newly renovated square, its church, its heart of village, its public garden of a new kind “La Nourrice” and its hiking offer.
