About
Vers-Pont-du-Gard, renowned for the quality of its stone, which was used to build the Pont du Gard.
In the 11th century, the village consisted of a small monastery and a few houses around the church, surrounded by walls and square towers.
Situated on the slopes of the hills whose stones were used to build the famous Roman aqueduct known as the “Pont du Gard”, the village of Vers-Pont du Gard and its Saint-Privat castle were already, according to the letters of Sidoine Apollinaire, a writer of the Lower Empire, the delight of the Roman families who lived there.
It was renowned for the “pleasantness” of its landscape, in which one of France’s most beautiful monuments, the UNESCO-listed Pont du Gard, is so perfectly framed.
The commune is bordered to the south by the Gardon river and to the north by limestone hills.
From the limestone massif on which the village rests, three main springs of abundant, living water gush forth: the Misserand washhouse with the listed Fontaine des Grenouilles, the Izières fountain and, more recently, the “Grand Font” washhouse built in 1882 in the center of the village.
In the 11th century, the village of Vers-Pont du Gard consisted of a small monastery and a few houses grouped around the church, all surrounded by walls and square towers, including the clock tower that still stands today.
The remains of the Roman aqueduct that carried water from the Eure spring (Uzès) to Nîmes encircle the commune to the north and east.
