Tour Médiévale de Valros

VALROS , Hérault – Cultural heritage

About

In 1199, the Viscount of Béziers, Raimon-Roger Trencavel, gave this “podium” to Étienne de Servian to build a fort on top of a Carolingian necropolis, which was destroyed when the Tower and its moats were constructed. The fort remained in use until 1250. Visible for miles around and a sentinel for wide-ranging surveillance, the monument was long neglected. The walls of the medieval buildings were used as stone quarries for more recent constructions in the surrounding area. Now redeveloped and restored by the commune, the Tour site has been awarded the “Tourisme & Handicap” label.
