TOUR MÉDIÉVALE DE VALROS

VALROS , Hérault – Cultural heritage

About

The Viscount of Béziers, Raimon-Roger Trencavel, gave this “podium” to Étienne de Servian in 1199 to build a fort, built on a Carolingian necropolis and destroyed during the construction of the Tower and its ditches. The fort only functioned until 1250. Visible for miles around, a sentinel allowing a wide surveillance, the monument remained for a long time neglected. The walls of the medieval buildings were used as a stone quarry for the more recent surrounding constructions. Reorganized and restored by the municipality, the site of the Tower now benefits from the “Tourism & Handicap” label
