TOUR DE L’HORLOGE

LE MALZIEU-VILLE , Lozère – Cultural heritage

About

Since its construction in the 13th century, this tower is the former feudal keep and was used as a prison in the 16th century

It keeps as many old elements like its stamp dated from the 15th century as more contemporary elements like its clock dated from 1879.

It was completely restored in 2012 by the municipality and offers an exceptional view of the town and its surroundings. Traduction automatique par DeepL via DATAtourisme

The clock tower seems to date from the 13th century. It was the feudal keep at the time of the barons of Mercoeur. During the Wars of Religion, it became a prison when the town of Le Malzieu was taken by Mathieu Merle in 1573.

Built of granite rubble, it has a square plan. Inside, there are four floors which were served, at the time, by a door on the first floor on the south side, used to limit intrusions. Today, the tower is crowned by a crenellated terrace.

Its stamp is dated 1470, although contemporary elements are also found throughout the building, such as the current door and clock, which date from the 19th century

Remarkably restored in 2012 by the municipality, it welcomes, since then, the public and offers a 360 ° panorama on the town and its surroundings. In addition, an exhibition of old photographs made by the council can remember the Malzieu of yesteryear. Traduction automatique par DeepL via DATAtourisme
