THE CLOCK TOWER
LE COLLET-DE-DEZE , Lozère – Cultural heritage
About
The clock towers, bell towers and other belfries equipped with monumental clocks are all evidence of the daily life of thousands of Lozereans, punctuated by these regular bells. As an integral part of the common heritage, these clock mechanisms, some of which still resound in the centre of the villages, are the result of complex mechanics and great know-how. The belfry of Collet-de-Dèze, which rises above the village, is surmounted by an elegant bell tower and decorated with a balcony. Its current clock, which is still in the belfry, dates from 1888, when the mayor of the village contracted with the clockmaker of Saint-Germain-de-Calberte for a “good clock with an external dial”. Equipped with a triangular mechanism, it rests on a base 61cm long and 26cm wide.
