Temple-Café-Horloge
AUBORD , Gard – Cultural heritage
About
Located in the heart of the town, next to the town hall, this temple was built at the end of the 19th century. It is unusual in that it is housed in the same building as the clock and the local café.
This unique architectural project encompasses the temple, town hall and school in the same building, conceived as such as early as 1839.
The rectangular temple includes a semicircular niche at the rear for the pulpit, which is recessed into a perpendicular building projecting from the temple, on which the town clock will later be erected. This rear wing of the temple houses the school on the first floor and the town hall on the second floor. This is the only known case of a “Temple-Mairie-École” transformed into a “Temple-Café-Horloge publique” under the Third Republic in France, with the current café owner still paying rent to the neighboring town hall, which owned the building!
Recently renovated in the style of the early 20th century, this particular café and its temple are one of the country’s most singular Protestant heritages.
