STATUE DE MARIANNE
MAUREILHAN , Hérault – Cultural heritage
About
The statue of Marianne stands in front of the town hall in the village of Maureilhan. Erected in 1882, it is not only the first representation of Marianne in Languedoc, but also one of the first in the whole of France. Marianne, a powerful symbol of the Republic, is distinguished by her majestic appearance. Here, unlike the traditional representation with the Phrygian bonnet, considered perhaps too provocative, the sculptors opted for a laurel wreath, a symbol of victory and citizenship, giving her dignity and grandeur, in keeping with republican ideals. Another symbol that makes this representation unique is the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, which she holds in her left hand. This rare and significant inclusion is a reminder of the importance of the fundamental values of our society: liberty, equality and fraternity.
