Sauve, a village full of character

SAUVE , Gard – Cultural heritage

About

Leaning against the Coutach massif, at the foot of which flows the Vidourle river, Sauve is a remarkable medieval village with the “Village de Caractère” label.

A stroll through the narrow streets of the village reveals the remains of the ramparts, fortified gates, 2 medieval towers, vaults and alleyways. The walk also takes you past townhouses, gates, the old market square, the Clock Tower and the Fontaine des Sources.

Home to the fabulist Florian, Sauve offers an unusual natural heritage, such as its “Mer des Rochers”, a limestone landscape shaped by water erosion.

Don’t miss
– The Pont vieux, one of the oldest bridges in France, which for a long time was the only way to cross the Vidourle.
– The ramparts, built in the Middle Ages as Sauve’s economy expanded.
– The gates, with their dual function of communication and protection. In the 18th century, Sauve had 8 of them.
– The Tour de Môle, part of the abbey walls. Its construction dates from the 12th-13th centuries.
– La Mer des Rochers, located on the Coutach plateau.
– The Conservatoire de la Fourche (Forks Conservatory), which showcases the expertise of the micocoulier fork-tree.

The “Village de Caractère” label: This tourist label is an initiative of the Gard department, supported by the Occitanie region and run by Gard Tourisme with the help of the Conseil d’Architecture d’Urbanisme et d’Environnement, to promote typical villages in the Gard region. It testifies to the efforts made by local authorities to obtain the required tourism qualifications. As guarantors of the quality of their heritage assets, they have also worked to welcome and raise public awareness around discovery circuits, and offer an attractive range of activities and leisure activities.
