The religious city of Rocamadour was from the 12th to the 14th century one of the high places of pilgrimage in the Christian West The famous Black Virgin, venerated for her miracles in the miraculous Notre-Dame chapel, has been the object of renewed devotion since the 19th century. The sanctuaries of Rocamadour, accessible by the Grand Escalier (the street of degrees) which climbs up from the centre of the town to reach the square, are set against the rocky outcrop of the limestone plateau. The semi-troglodytic sanctuaries were thus built during the 12th century on the narrow and steep space of a rocky terrace.The shrines of Rocamadour were, from the 12th to the 14th C., one of the major places of pilgrimage in the Christian West. The famous Black Virgin, venerated for her miracles performed in the “Miraculous” chapel of Our Lady, is the object of a devotion which regained its vigour in the 19th C. and continues today. Rocamadour’s sanctuaries cling to the steep cliffs on the edge of the limestone plateau, and are reached via the Great Pilgrim Staircase which climbs from the village street to the centre of the religious complex. The semi-troglodytic chapels were built during the 12th C. on a narrow shelf of rock above the sheer drop into the valley.
