Pont-canal
BEZIERS , Hérault – Cultural heritage
About
Built downstream of the 9 locks at Fonseranes, it was commissioned in 1858. Bordered by an avenue of majestic cypress trees, the bridge spans the Orb.
Thanks to the bridge, ships can pass over the river instead of across it. This “boat bridge” facilitates barge navigation, overcoming the difficulties associated with the Orb’s highly irregular flow.
With a height of 12 m, a width of 28 m and a length of 240 m, the Pont-Canal has always had a gallery running beneath the channel, to facilitate inspections of the structure.
