Georges Spénale Park

SAINT-SULPICE , Tarn – Cultural heritage

About

Georges Spénale Park offers a peaceful setting for relaxing and taking a stroll with the family. Located behind City Hall next to the swimming pool, visitors appreciate the coolness of the park in the summer and the wide variety of tree species that have been planted there.

Among the many tree species, there is a rarity: a tree with distinctive fruit, the Osage orange. It is a deciduous tree native to the southern and central United States (from Arkansas and Oklahoma to Texas); its bark was once used for tanning leather and also yields a yellow dye.
The park is named after Georges Spénale, who served as mayor of Saint-Sulpice in 1965. A Socialist, he advocated for a humane form of socialism; in 1967, he was elected the first president of the Council of Europe. He was also a poet.
