PARC DE LA REYNERIE

A 5-acre park since the end of the 18th Century

Purchased in the mid-16th century by M. de Reynier, a professor of law at the University of Toulouse, this estate, with the Italianised name of Reynery, was to have a succession of owners, the most famous of whom was Guillaume du Barry, who married Jeanne Bécu in 1781; she was known as the Comtesse du Barry and was the favourite and mistress of Louis XV. At the time, the Reynerie estate comprised a château surrounded by gardens, a fishpond, a dovecote, arable land, meadows, woods and vineyards. Guillaume had a country house built next to the château, dedicated to festivities and leisure, named the ‘Folie’ and modelled on the Petit Trianon. It is this building that the public can admire today, as the château itself has since disappeared. Listed as a Historic Monument since 1963, this ‘Folie’ features a rotunda music room and a marble vestibule. The grounds are a typical French-style garden. They include a pond surrounded by a hornbeam arbour, a nymphaeum and a greenhouse. They also feature some very beautiful trees, including Virginia tulip trees, a Napoleon pine and magnolias. Linden trees, hornbeams, ash trees, maples, holm oaks, soapberry trees, persimmons, hackberries, Corsican pines and ginkgo trees complete this collection of plants.
