Notre-Dame de la Rouvière
DOMAZAN , Gard – Cultural heritage
About
Built in the 12th century, the church of Sainte-Marie de Domazan was burnt down during the Wars of Religion when the village burnt down in 1562. In the early 19th century, lightning struck the building, causing the vault to collapse.
The church was later renamed Notre-Dame de Rouvière. This may be linked to a Rouvière (white oak) forest near the village.
Originally, the bell tower was on the side near the north pillar. It was moved to the front when the vault collapsed in the 1880s.
In front of the church was the cemetery, and the ground had risen to such an extent that the entrance to the building resembled a cave, making it necessary to clear it to facilitate the entry of the faithful.
In the 16th century, the church was deemed too small, and an ogival-style chapel was built, dedicated to Saint Blaise and Saint Sylvestre. The second chapel was built in 1874.
