MUSEE : LES SILLONS DE LA MEMOIRE

LAGARDE , Haute-Garonne – Cultural heritage

About

Passionate about history from an early age, particularly that of the First and Second World Wars, Maxime, a farmer by trade, has been collecting and storing collectors’ items from that era for over 20 years. Maxime’s passion is rooted in family history: that of his great-grandfathers, heroes of the First World War, and of Manuel Palos, leader of the Naillous Maquis and emblematic figure of the Resistance in the Lauragais region during the Second World War. Just a stone’s throw from his organic farmhouse pasta workshop, “Epi’Nup”, the museum is housed in a former henhouse, a large 100m² space that has been refurbished and comprises 3 exhibition rooms. The museum brings together 95% of his personal collection, as well as donations from local families and history buffs who have been won over by the approach. There are old weapons, everyday objects, uniforms and even two renovated period vehicles. The aim is to keep alive the collective memory of the two world wars, to share these discoveries with the general public, and to pay tribute to our ancestors who were scarred by these troubled times. The museum offers a chronological tour, with display cases, explanatory panels and staged scenes with costumed mannequins. Immersion is total. The tour begins with the outbreak of war in 1914, then plunges visitors into a trench in 1916. The tour then moves on to the debacle of 1940, with a visit to Dunkirk and the Blitz in England. The tour continues with the local Resistance, and ends on the Normandy landing beaches. Finally, there is a section devoted to the terrible civil war in Spain. The museum will evolve over time. Maxime’s collection grows year by year, as does his desire to keep alive and pass on these testimonies of the past. The museum is open by appointment only: call 06 59 94 45 48 or email maxmarty31290@hotmail.fr (call at least 5 days before the date you wish to visit). You can follow the tour with Maxime’s explanations; Recommended length of visit: around 1 hour School groups (maximum 20 people) on request by e-mail or telephone.
