MUSEE DES MOULAGES

About

An educational university museum, the Musée des Moulages was founded in 1890 with the aim of preserving and exhibiting collections related to the teaching of archaeology (plaster casts of sculptures, original ancient objects, photographic archives). Inaugurated on the occasion of the 600th anniversary of the University of Montpellier, the museum was housed in the University Palace, home of the Faculty of Arts. The purchase in 1904 of the collection of casts belonging to Canon Didelot de Valence made it possible to expand the historical periods represented and to introduce medieval art. The museum, the ‘jewel’ of the former Faculty of Arts, is now an essential part of the University of Montpellier Paul-Valéry. It is both a historical testimony to teaching and scientific research at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and a key player in the cultural life of the university thanks to its scientific, artistic and cultural events.
