About
Built in the 1st century AD, this Roman aqueduct still raises some questions.
Measuring 1.70 m high and 1.55 m wide, the aqueduct takes its water source to the west of the town. Its underground remains can be followed for about 5 km along the foothills of the Costière, crossing the commune eastward toward Beaucaire.
At a place known as “Draille des Arcs”, the structure turns sharply south via a regulation basin toward the marshy plain. In this section, the aqueduct becomes aerial. Impressive remains of the piers that once supported it have been found over more than 1,500 meters. Beyond that point, however, all traces seem to have disappeared to date.
Nevertheless, considering the size of the structure and the flow it could deliver (an average of 150 liters per second), it was likely intended to supply a city, or at least one of its major districts. The most probable hypothesis today is that it supplied the wealthy ancient district of Trinquetaille, located on the right bank of the Rhône and connected to Arelate (Arles).
Although remains of this aqueduct can be found in several places across the commune, the large 22-meter section preserved in the Water Museum is one of the most remarkable.
Note : The exterior arches installed near the site are only a representation of the aerial section of the Draille des Arcs aqueduct.
