Pending reopening after restoration: Exhibition in the garden + audiovisual room with Elisabeth’s film (12′) + shop access. Free admission for individuals. Château d’en Bardou, an elegant Art Nouveau building completed in 1902, topped with a glass dome and originally built on 4 equal branches in the shape of a Greek cross, was commissioned by the industrialist and politician Eugène Bardou. This grand residence illustrates the extraordinary economic boom in Roussillon. The château, rented by Secours Suisse d’Aide aux Enfants des Victimes de Guerre, was converted into a maternity hospital between 1939 and 1944 by schoolteacher and nurse Elisabeth Eidenbenz (1913-2011), who was awarded the Légion d’Honneur in 2007. As a result of her efforts, 595 children were born to mothers of different nationalities and faiths. The Maternité Suisse, listed as a Historic Monument in 2013, is a symbol of hope and peace, and one of the European memorial sites of the 20th century.
