Consuls’ House
SEVERAC-LE-CHATEAU , Aveyron – Cultural heritage
About
In the medieval town of Sévérac, the Consuls’ House, a magnificent 17th-century residence, opens its doors in summer.
In the heart of the medieval town of Sévérac-le-Château, the Consuls’ House is one of the finest examples of 17th-century civil architecture. Once home to the municipal administration, this building has been carefully restored by the “Friends of the Château” association. Today, it houses a free museum, open daily in July and August from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., as well as during the European Heritage Days.
The visit begins in the courtyard, adorned with a sculpted gateway and antique wood panelling. A glazed gallery leads to the various rooms.
On the ground floor, a scale model shows the château as it appeared in 1669. Exhibitions illustrate daily life at the Château de Sévérac and medical practices in the 17th century.
Upstairs, the Consuls’ Room features a remarkable painted ceiling, a period fireplace and historic block-printed wallpaper.
