Les Jardins de la Butte

GOURDON , Lot – Cultural heritage

About

This is the Zig-Zag Gardens project: here, where the houses have disappeared, you will find gardens after the mediaeval fashion. Several of the elements used in them come from the time of Charlemagne, notably the choice of plants and division of the gardens according to their function. The Capitulaire de Villis, passed by Charlemagne in about 812 A.D., is a legislative act known particularly for the 94 tree, vegetable and plant varieties which were to be grown in the gardens throughout his kingdom. This list, little known nowadays, profoundly changed the character of mediaeval gardens. The Seneschal’s Gardens are a journey back towards the 13th C. via a maze based on the Pilgrim’s Way.The Jardins de la Butte comprise a series of thematic gardens in Gourdon’s medieval quarter, designed in the spirit of Charlemagne’s era. These gardens reflect the evolution of medieval garden organization. The Seneschal Gardens feature a show courtyard and picnic area adorned with a giant boxwood butterfly. Additionally, the Fairy Tale Garden, located at the media library, offers a contemporary setting with living wicker huts, grassy areas, and enchanting characters from fairy tales.
