A must-see landmark in Saint-Sulpice, the suspension bridge remains a magnificent structure that stands as a testament to the glory of progress during the height of the European Industrial Revolution in the late 19th century. It offers a beautiful view of the Agout River.
Built between 1847 and 1849, it spans the Agout River and connects the towns of Rabastens, Couffouleux, and Saint-Sulpice. Prominent figures from these three towns commissioned its construction: they pooled their funds and, in return, collected a toll. This is why there is a toll house at each end of the bridge. Originally built with a wooden deck, it did not withstand the devastating flood of March 1930 and was rebuilt the following year with an all-metal deck supporting a concrete slab covered with an asphalt pavement. The most recent renovations were completed in 2000. It was one of the last bridges of its kind built in France and is now one of the must-see attractions in the bastide town.
