The monks’ courtyard is located in an inner courtyard, facing the Saint-Jean archdeaconry, which offers its elegant 1st French Renaissance décor. This vegetable garden is the heir to the medieval “hortus” where the vegetables most frequently eaten in the Middle Ages were grown in plessis of braided chestnut trees. In addition to its nutritional and medicinal qualities, the nettle is especially famous for its stinging power: its hairs contain formic acid, the same venom as that of ants!
