Come discover the legend of the Jacquemart, which chimes the hours in the town of Lavaur!
Saint-Alain Cathedral in Lavaur is the only town in southwestern France to have a “Jacquemart,” an iconic figure—a wooden automaton hoisted up in the tower.
Legend has it that during the Wars of Religion, a Protestant prisoner locked in the cathedral tower was forced to ring the bells every hour, day and night… He devised a ruse by building a mechanical device to do it for him, and was thus able to escape right under his jailers’ noses!
