THE CAPITOLE – CITY HALL
TOULOUSE , Haute-Garonne – Cultural heritage
About
In Toulouse there is no Mairie, but rather a majestic Capitole! An emblematic building, it is home to the town hall, a theatre and rooms of state where you can bump into celebrities from the city.
The Capitole, which has been the seat of municipal power since its construction – commissioned by the Capitouls in the 12th century – and which has been transformed and embellished throughout the ages, displays its majestic neoclassical façade on the unmissable square of the same name. Its walls recount the defining moments of Toulouse’s history: from the Cathar period to the creation of the Jeux Floraux, from the Counts of Toulouse to the siege of the city. Upstairs, you pass through magnificent reception rooms, adorned with Paul Gervais’s allegories of Love and Henri Martin’s ten giant canvases, notably the Salle des Illustres, whose paintings trace the history of Toulouse and whose busts bring to life the figures who have left their mark on the city. Are you a fan of opera? The Capitole is also Toulouse’s famous opera house.
