L’EGLISE SAINTE LÉOCADIE

VIC-LA-GARDIOLE , Hérault – Cultural heritage

About

The Saint-Léocadie church was built in 1173 when royal permission was given to fortify churches. It’s a military-style building: a fortress built to ward off invaders. The church was built without foundations and does not have a chapel. The stone on the southern side is fossilised shell limestone. Originally, the building featured an arched barrel vault with transverse arches. Now only the first bay has this type of arched structure. The limestone roofing slates were placed directly onto the vault. The other bays were built from wood in 1920, at the same time the church was listed as a historical monument.
