About
Mysterious church that shines for its classical treasures and revisited by local representations!
Although it is occasionally a concert venue, the Church of St. John remains nevertheless the true liturgical meeting place in the heart of the city. The adjoining shops are a reminder that one of the oldest markets in the city was held here. Dating from the 15th century, the current building, in southern Gothic style, houses a large baroque altarpiece by the sculptor Jean Brunelo: the Baptism of Christ is represented there. Following the example of the great classical masters, the three apostles painted by a contemporary local artist, Bruno Schmeltz, are here inhabitants of the valleys, authentic Pyrenean shepherds.
