GARDENS COMPANS CAFFARELLI
TOULOUSE , Haute-Garonne – Cultural heritage
About
In the very heart of the Compans-Caffarelli business district, this large garden is home to some strange birds: you may even spot a phoenix!
Situated near to the ancient ramparts of Toulouse, visible at Boulevard Duportal, this garden is surprisingly exotic. It is actually home to the Japanese Garden, a Zen garden with a tea pavilion, red bridge and dragon. But across the remaining 7ha, you can relax and watch your children play, enjoy a drink at the bar or take a picnic beside the vast pond… Created in 1980 on the initiative of Mayor Pierre Baudis to replace the barracks site abandoned by the army, here you can also find spaces devoted to the cities that are twinned with Toulouse: for Elche you have a bust of the Lady of Elche, a statue by Picasso for Kiev and the sculpture of a phoenix for Atlanta. You can also meet a celebrity there; Carlos Gardel, the superstar singer of the Argentine Tango, was born here in Toulouse.
